He was born in Busan (South Korea) in 1980. At the age of 13, he entered at Atelier of drawing and painting. After studying at Busan Design High school, he began his studies in classical Art at Art University in 1998. In 1999 his travels to Italy opened his eyes to a world he did not know. The existence of the "foreign" fascinated him.
In 2001, he arrived in France, continued his studies in Beaux-arts. He is interested in the videos and experimental films of Jonas Mekas, Bill Viola, Garry Hill and the filmmakers of the 1920s. In 2005, he entered ENSAD (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris), Section Video / Photo, where he learned classic cinema and documentary under the influence of Henri Foucault (Phographer) and Alain Moreau, a great film buff, documentary filmmaker, who died in 2006.
In 2008, he became resident of Le Fresnoy, one of the most precious Cinema & Art schools in France with la Fémis and le Louis Lumière. He directed Middle-length feature film, "IN THE DARK", shooted in South Korea, and a fantastic film, "RED ROAD", selected in several international festivals. He collaborates with British sound artist Robin Rimbaud, also known as Scanner, who has worked with Radiohead. He also directed "SELF PORTRAIT INTO HELL", project of Choi, who known for his collaborations with artists like Nan Goldin, Jim Dine. During this period, he is interested by Philippe Grandrieux (Sombre - 1998, The new life - 2002), Nikita Mikhalkov (Urga - 1991, le barbier de Sibérie - 1998), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Amores perros - 2000, 21grammes - 2002), Abbas Kiarostami (Passager - 1974, Ten - 2001). In 2009, fascinated by the desert, he travels alone to Australia, and he made a film in Super 8 : "ISLAND". A poetic film inspired by his idol, Wim Wenders, "Paris, Texas" (1984).
In 2011, he won the Grand Prize of 9th Asiana International Short Film Festival (South Korea) with his documentary short film "Promise" selected also in many festivals. The same year, Winner 2011 of Louis Lumière (French Institute) for development of his first documentary feature film "Looking for north koreans", he shooted so in China and South Korea.
Selected among one of 6 directors of 24th Session of the Residence de Cannes (Cinefondation), actually, he develops his feature film projects "Secret of my north korean father" and "RED HOUSE".
